Playlists to help you get through each phase of your menstrual cycle

As the new year approaches we are all writing resolutions—going to the gym more, eating less processed foods, flossing our teeth everyday. Personally, I’m looking to collect more lore. These tasks often drift away after a few weeks, only for us to try again next year. But why is this? It’s fun to set goals, but as soon as one thing gets in the way, those goals can become a lot less fun.

One thing that often gets in the way is our periods. Whether you’re feeling drowsy, grumpy, or dealing with other symptoms, it can be hard to stay motivated. Understanding your cycle and what helps you succeed can be key to accomplishing the goals we set before the ball drops.

In the future, we plan on releasing recipes, workout plans, and activities that help you throughout the month—not just during the menstruation phase of your cycle. But before we can get to that, you need to understand what each phase looks like. And what better way to do that than through music?

I’ve put on my band nerd hat to create four playlists that capture the vibe of each phase of your cycle. Hopefully, these aren’t just great mixes to rock out to, but also a helpful way to understand how each part of the month flows!

1 - Menstrual Phase (period)

  • Duration: 3-7 days

  • Vibe: Sleepy, self-care, emotional

  • Playlist: Bleeding Love

First up to bat is the menstrual cycle. Probably the most well-known phase, this is when menstruation occurs. It lasts around 3–7 days, depending on the person, and is the easiest to identify because this is when bleeding happens. It’s the perfect time to rest, reflect, and take care of yourself.

2 - Follicular Phase

  • Duration: Around 7-14 Days

  • Vibe: Optimistic and Creative

  • Playlist: Hot girl reset

The follicular phase is a great time to get things done. Overlapping with the menstrual phase, it begins on the first day of menstruation. During this phase, our motivation hits a high, making it the perfect opportunity to reset!

3 - Ovulation Phase

  • Duration: 1-3 days

  • Vibe: Energetic and Social

  • Playlist: Sassy and Flirty

The third phase of the cycle is the shortest and is when estrogen is at its peak. This is typically when women feel their most attractive, confident, and social. It’s the perfect time to strut your stuff!

4 - Luteal Phase

  • Duration: 14 days

  • Vibe: Cozy yet unpredictable

  • Playlist: Moody but make it cute

The luteal phase can be the hardest to handle emotionally—mainly because it’s packed with so many emotions. This phase truly feels like a roller coaster. As it progresses, you might quickly shift from feeling cozy and nurturing to moody and irritable.

Tracking your moods:

While this is a brief outline of how you may respond to the different phases of your cycle, not everyone is the same. Writing in a journal or using an app can track cravings, sleep patterns, exercise levels, and more throughout the month to help you better understand your own body.
